Recipe for Fun!
Define a path for children to follow by creating a imaginary balance beam on the floor with tape. Make stepping stones with tape, paper, or pillows. Have children follow the path by crawling over pillows, under a table, around a desk, etc. Use those directional words to help children learn and experience them.
Benefits:
- Hones working memory by having children follow multi-step directions. This skill is necessary to complete daily activities, like getting dressed or brushing teeth. It helps kids attend to detail, process the task and execute in sequential order.
- Provides proprioceptive input. Proprioception is knowing where your body is at all times. For instance, knowing where your arms are without having to look at them. Your body uses this input to control balance, coordination and movement.
Modifications:
- For an easier time: Walk through the course slowly and methodically. Keep the connecting path elements close together.
- For extended challenge: Hop on one foot, jump on two feet, create a series of ups and downs – crawl, hop, make kids squat and stand throughout the course. Make the connecting path elements farther apart.
