Recipe for Fun!

Fun and fancy free! Enjoy the beat, and move to the music!

One person controls the music. When the music plays, everyone moves and dances. When the music stops, children freeze in their last position until the music starts up again.

Benefits:

  • Movement helps keep joints flexible.
  • Auditory processing and responding. Being able to attend to and process some sounds while tuning out background/ambient sounds helps children strengthen their ability to receive, organize and interpret auditory input.
  • Attention and control. Children concentrate on the music and respond with their bodies when it stops.
  • Balance. The ability to freeze and hold a position (static balance) and the ability to maintain balance when moving (dynamic balance) are necessary for everyday activities, like sitting at a desk or climbing stairs.

Modifications:

  • For children who may not have voluntary movements, play with a partner so they can experience the movement. Have the partner hold hands and move to the beat of the music.
  • Dance using just arms or just legs.
  • Dance in a seated position.

Variations:

  • Alter the volume of the music. When the volume is low, have children dance slowly. When the volume is high, dance wildly with large movements.
  • Freeze in the position of an animal when the music stops.
